1950s Mens Fashion
|
In the 1950's men fashion were mostly based on business as most clothing pieces were based on suits. It was however slightly less structured than the suits of previous years, but still made of heavy materials even in the summer. There was little variation in the fifties and men dressed very conservatively. Men were expected to wear suits most of the time and even when relaxing at home, men were seen in their smart shirts and suit pants. They also wore hats and although the styles were smaller than previous decades, the idea was still that a man needs to wear a hat in order to be properly dressed. Colors of the suits and hats were mostly, brown, charcoal, gray or blue and made in single-breasted style jackets and shorter than the previous years. Shirts, which were starched and white, was the hight of the fashion in those years. The ties got thinner, with less pronounced shirt collars and cuff links were worn as part of the 1950's dress code. The fabrics used got better and silk, cotton and wool were introduced. In the early 1950's the colors stayed muted and solid, however towards the end of the 1950's patterns was introduced. It started with tasteful thin stripes and quiet tweeds.
Later in the 1950, the jacket lengths were not so strict anymore and it became less structured than before. The suit trousers started using less fabric as it got narrower around the legs. Formal wear in 1950s mens fashion was tuxedos and it did not matter whether it had tails or not as long as bow ties were worn in either black or white. As people became leisure that is more affluent, time came to the foreground and fashion changed into the allowance of short-sleeved polo shirts and button shirts with short sleeves. Later long sleeved shirts with button fronts also appeared on the market as well as t-shirts and jeans. Men were finally allowed to express themselves at different comfort levels and the fashion sense became a lot more comfortable. Many fashions of the 1950's are still hits in today's fashion. Different colors and patterns were introduced in the late fifties and cardigan sweaters became more popular worn over polo shirts or button shirts. Hawaiian shirts were introduced in that period and were bold, bright and colorful. Sleeves rolled up to biceps became very popular in this fashion era for men and suit jackets started evolving into patterned sport jackets still worn today. |
